Moving in Ulm

Ulm lies on the Danube, directly opposite the Bavarian town of Neu-Ulm. A move between the two usually means only a short drive. As they belong to different states, though, you should also plan for registering at your new place of residence and for possible differences in public holidays.

Ulm is manageable, and much is close together: the old town around the Minster, the Weststadt, Söflingen and up on the Eselsberg the university. Opposite on the Danube lies Neu-Ulm, and the border between Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria runs through the middle of the river.

The old town and the Fishermen's Quarter

In the Fischerviertel, half-timbered houses stand on narrow lanes and canals, with tight stairs and little space outside the door. Access around the Minster is restricted too. Describe the location in your request so the company plans a suitable vehicle.

Weststadt, Söflingen and the Eselsberg

The Weststadt has many apartment blocks without lifts and densely parked streets; a no-parking zone from the city of Ulm often makes sense there. Söflingen has an old village centre with narrow streets. The Eselsberg has student halls and larger housing complexes, where lifts, floors and longer walks between the car park and the entrance can play a part in planning the move.

Ulm and Neu-Ulm

A move across the Danube is short but leads into another state. When you move across the state border, you register your new address with the registration office at your new place of residence, and some public holidays in Bavaria differ from Baden-Württemberg. Plan the date with both calendars in mind.

No more low-emission zone

Ulm's low-emission zone was lifted in June 2024, at the same time as Neu-Ulm's; no sticker is needed on either side of the Danube any more.

Into the region

Many moves go to Blaubeuren, Ehingen, Senden or along the A8 towards Stuttgart and Augsburg. Which jobs you can take on yourself to save money is set out in Saving on moving costs.

Step-01

Tell us about your move

Where you are moving from and to, when, and roughly what is coming with you. It takes about two minutes, it costs nothing, and you are not committed to anything at the end of it.

Step-02

We pass your request on to suitable movers

Every request is read by a person before it goes anywhere. It then reaches the companies whose service area covers your pick-up address — you do not have to find them or ring round.

Step-03

Quotes come back to you

Each one arrives by email with a link to your own page. Compare the prices, read what each company says it includes, and ask them anything before you decide.

Moving in Ulm: the usual questions

The distance is short, but Neu-Ulm is in Bavaria. You register your new address with the registration office at your new place of residence, and some public holidays differ between Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

No. It was lifted in June 2024, as was Neu-Ulm's.

Not everywhere. Lanes and bridges are narrow; describe the location in your request and the company will plan a suitable vehicle.

There is no one figure, which is the reason this page exists. The price turns on the distance, the floor, whether a lift is involved and how much is coming with you — and moving companies weigh those differently. Asking several movers covering Ulm at once is the only way to see the spread for your own move, and it costs nothing.

Four to six weeks is comfortable, and the end of a month is the busy part everywhere, Ulm included. If your date is fixed and close, say so in the request: a company that cannot make it will tell you quickly, which is worth knowing early.

Yes. Each company sets the area it covers, and your request reaches the ones whose area includes your move-out address in Ulm — whether you are moving across town or to the other end of the country.
