Moving in Berlin

A move in Berlin is rarely just A to B: old buildings without lifts, a parking permit to arrange, and a good hour on the road between Spandau and Köpenick. Comparing here means comparing who knows the city, not only who is cheapest.

Berlin is big, and every neighbourhood moves differently. In Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg, Neukölln or Friedrichshain a move often means an old building: fourth or fifth floor without a lift, narrow stairwells and quite often a rear building that is reached only through the gateway and across the courtyard. In Marzahn, Lichtenberg or Gropiusstadt there is usually a lift, but long corridors and fixed times at which it may be used for furniture.

Both decide the price more than the distance does. So state the floor, the lift and the way from the vehicle to the flat door as precisely as you can in your request. For very high floors or bulky furniture, a furniture lift can be worth it.

What does a move in Berlin cost?

For a move within Berlin you should generally expect around 500 to 1,500 euros. At the lower end are a single room or a small flat with little furniture, at the upper end a family flat over several floors with assembly. These are guide values, not fixed prices: what your move costs is only settled in the quote.

These points make most of the difference:

  • Moving volume: how much furniture and how many boxes are actually coming
  • Floor and lift at both addresses
  • Carrying distance from the van to the door, especially with rear buildings
  • Extras such as dismantling and assembly, packing or a no-parking zone
  • Date: month-ends and weekends are in the greatest demand

How a moving price is made up is explained in detail in How much does a move cost?. If you are leaving Berlin for another city, the overview of long-distance move costs helps.

Applying for a no-parking zone in Berlin

In most inner-city locations the van will find no space outside the door without a no-parking zone, and every metre of carrying costs time. The road traffic authority of the district the address is in is responsible; for moving out and moving in in different districts, that is two applications. Allow around two weeks, because the signs have to be in place some days before the move. Many moving companies take care of the application and the signs for a surcharge. Ask about it in the quote.

Inside the S-Bahn ring the low-emission zone also applies: vehicles need a green sticker. With a moving company that goes without saying; with a van you hire yourself it is worth a look at the windscreen.

The best time

At the end of the month and at the start of the university terms in April and October, Berlin is booked up. Anyone who can choose a weekday in the middle of the month gets a date more easily and often the better price. Four to six weeks' notice is comfortable. It is worth comparing several quotes in any case, instead of taking the first.

Step-01

Tell us about your move

Where you are moving from and to, when, and roughly what is coming with you. It takes about two minutes, it costs nothing, and you are not committed to anything at the end of it.

Step-02

We pass it to movers in your area

Every request is read by a person before it goes anywhere. It then reaches the companies whose service area covers your pick-up address — you do not have to find them or ring round.

Step-03

Quotes come back to you

Each one arrives by email with a link to your own page. Compare the prices, read what each company says it includes, and ask them anything before you decide.

Moving in Berlin: the usual questions

At the road traffic authority of the district the address is in. For move-out and move-in addresses in different districts, two applications are needed. Allow about two weeks, or have the moving company handle the application.

Yes. Inside the S-Bahn ring, vehicles need a green sticker. Moving companies' vehicles have one; if you hire a van yourself, check for it before you set off.

Yes, that is everyday business in Berlin. State the floor and the missing lift in your request, and the companies will plan enough helpers or suggest a furniture lift. The price is higher than on the ground floor but stays predictable.

There is no one figure, which is the reason this page exists. The price turns on the distance, the floor, whether a lift is involved and how much is coming with you — and moving companies weigh those differently. Asking several movers covering Berlin at once is the only way to see the spread for your own move, and it costs nothing.

Four to six weeks is comfortable, and the end of a month is the busy part everywhere, Berlin included. If your date is fixed and close, say so in the request: a company that cannot make it will tell you quickly, which is worth knowing early.

Yes. Each company sets the area it covers, and your request reaches the ones whose area includes your move-out address in Berlin — whether you are moving across town or to the other end of the country.
