Moving in Duisburg

In Duisburg the Rhine, the port or a motorway roadworks site often lies between two addresses. Anyone who compares several moving companies quickly sees which one knows the route and which has only counted the kilometres.

Duisburg is longer than you think: from Walsum in the north to Mündelheim in the south it is a good twenty kilometres, and the Rhine flows right through the middle. Anyone moving here should therefore look at the map first and only then at the distance.

Left and right of the Rhine

Rheinhausen, Homberg, Baerl and Rumeln-Kaldenhausen lie on the left bank of the Rhine, the larger part of the city on the right. Between them there are only a few bridges, and each of them is a bottleneck in rush hour. A move from Hochfeld to Rheinhausen looks like a stone's throw on the map and can still take an hour in the late afternoon. Then there is the port: around Ruhrort, Meiderich and Kaßlerfeld many lorries are on the road, and on the A40 and the A59 roadworks are part of daily life. A moving company that drives in Duisburg regularly plans route and time of day around that.

The districts themselves differ greatly too. In Duissern, Neudorf, the Dellviertel and Hochfeld there are old buildings with high ceilings and narrow stairwells, and a lift is the exception. At the Innenhafen and in newer developments, by contrast, there is an underground car park and a lift, but often fixed rules from the property management about when loading and unloading are allowed. In the south, in Buchholz, Huckingen, Großenbaum or Rahm, detached and terraced houses predominate: here the van usually stands right outside the door, but cellar, garage and garden furniture are added.

What decides the price

There is no standard price for a move in Duisburg. A quote follows the effort, and that depends above all on these points:

  • the amount of furniture and boxes, including cellar, attic and garage
  • the floor and a lift at both addresses
  • the way between the van and the front door
  • services wanted, such as packing, dismantling and assembly or fitting a kitchen
  • the route, especially when the Rhine lies in between

The more precisely you state these things, the closer the quote is to the later invoice amount. How to go about it is shown in How to fill in a moving request properly. What lies behind the individual items is explained in Calculating moving costs.

No-parking zone and low-emission zone

In Duissern, Neudorf, the Dellviertel and Hochfeld parking is scarce. A no-parking zone outside both houses saves time and distance there. It is applied for at the City of Duisburg; the road traffic authority is responsible. Allow around two weeks, because the signs have to be put up some days beforehand. Many moving companies handle that for a surcharge.

Large parts of Duisburg belong to the Ruhr low-emission zone. Vehicles need the green sticker there. With a moving company that is a given; with a hired van you should check.

Moves across the city boundary

Duisburg lies at the seam between the Ruhr area and the Lower Rhine. Many moves lead to Moers, Krefeld, Oberhausen, Mülheim or Düsseldorf, and moving companies from those cities work in Duisburg just as well. Anyone who searches only in their own city therefore easily overlooks a suitable quote. At the start of term in April and October it is mainly small transports that are in demand around the campus in Neudorf; anyone moving something larger is most likely to find a free date in those weeks in the middle of the month.

Step-01

Tell us about your move

Where you are moving from and to, when, and roughly what is coming with you. It takes about two minutes, it costs nothing, and you are not committed to anything at the end of it.

Step-02

We pass it to movers in your area

Every request is read by a person before it goes anywhere. It then reaches the companies whose service area covers your pick-up address — you do not have to find them or ring round.

Step-03

Quotes come back to you

Each one arrives by email with a link to your own page. Compare the prices, read what each company says it includes, and ask them anything before you decide.

Moving in Duisburg: the usual questions

Yes. Moves between the districts on the left and right of the Rhine are everyday business in Duisburg. Because of the bridges, though, allow more driving time than the distance suggests, and avoid rush hour for the date if you can.

At the City of Duisburg; the road traffic authority is responsible. Allow about two weeks, or have the moving company handle the application and the signs.

Large parts of the city lie in the Ruhr low-emission zone, where the green sticker is compulsory. A moving company's vehicles have it. If you hire a van yourself, check before you collect it.

That happens automatically. Through Umzigo your request goes to the companies whose area covers your move-out address, regardless of which city they are based in.

Yes. You pay nothing for the request and enter into no obligation. You compare the quotes at your leisure and decide yourself whether to accept one.

There is no one figure, which is the reason this page exists. The price turns on the distance, the floor, whether a lift is involved and how much is coming with you — and moving companies weigh those differently. Asking several movers covering Duisburg at once is the only way to see the spread for your own move, and it costs nothing.

Four to six weeks is comfortable, and the end of a month is the busy part everywhere, Duisburg included. If your date is fixed and close, say so in the request: a company that cannot make it will tell you quickly, which is worth knowing early.

Yes. Each company sets the area it covers, and your request reaches the ones whose area includes your move-out address in Duisburg — whether you are moving across town or to the other end of the country.
