Moving in Hamburg

In Hamburg the street often decides the price: narrow access in Eimsbüttel, raised ground floors in Eppendorf, and a furniture lift quoted differently from Elbchaussee than from Wandsbek. Several quotes show those differences straight away.

Hamburg has two faces, and both have to do with water and stone. In Eimsbüttel, Ottensen, Winterhude or the Schanze, nineteenth-century houses stand shoulder to shoulder: narrow streets, kerbs parked solid, flats on the third or fourth floor and often a raised ground floor that costs half a flight of stairs before the first floor even begins. In Wandsbek, Rahlstedt or Bergedorf there is usually room outside the house, but the routes through the city are longer.

Then there is the Elbe. Anyone moving between Harburg or Wilhelmsburg and the north has to go through the Elbe tunnel or over the Elbe bridges, and there the time of day decides whether the drive takes twenty minutes or an hour. Good moving companies plan their departure around that. Give both addresses precisely in your request and it is allowed for from the start.

What does a move in Hamburg cost?

For a move within Hamburg you should generally expect around 500 to 1,500 euros. A room in a shared flat or a small flat is at the lower end, a family flat over several floors with furniture assembly at the upper end. These are guide values, not fixed prices.

It becomes more expensive mainly through:

  • high floors without a lift, as is the rule in old buildings
  • long carrying distances when the van cannot stop outside the door
  • an external lift or furniture lift, often the better answer to narrow stairwells
  • extras such as packing, dismantling and assembly
  • dates at the end of the month

What lies behind each item is explained in Calculating moving costs.

A no-parking zone in Hamburg

In the densely built districts a no-parking zone almost always makes sense. In Hamburg the road traffic authority at the local police station (Polizeikommissariat) is responsible. Allow about two weeks, since the signs have to be up some days before the move. Most moving companies offer to take care of the application and the signs. Have the price for it shown in the quote.

When to move

As everywhere, month-ends and weekends are taken first. In Hamburg there are also the big events that close whole districts: the port anniversary, the marathon, the Cyclassics. A quick look at the calendar saves a van that cannot get to the front door. If you are flexible, choose a weekday in the middle of the month and compare several quotes.

Step-01

Tell us about your move

Where you are moving from and to, when, and roughly what is coming with you. It takes about two minutes, it costs nothing, and you are not committed to anything at the end of it.

Step-02

We pass it to movers in your area

Every request is read by a person before it goes anywhere. It then reaches the companies whose service area covers your pick-up address — you do not have to find them or ring round.

Step-03

Quotes come back to you

Each one arrives by email with a link to your own page. Compare the prices, read what each company says it includes, and ask them anything before you decide.

Moving in Hamburg: the usual questions

At the road traffic authority of the local police station (Polizeikommissariat). Allow around two weeks, or have the moving company do it.

Often, yes. In many old buildings the stairwells are narrow and the floors high. A furniture lift saves carrying time and spares the furniture and the stairwell. State the floor and the stairwell in your request, and the companies can plan for one from the outset.

Yes. Each company sets the area it covers, and your request goes to those whose area includes your move-out address. Moves between the districts north and south of the Elbe are everyday business.

There is no one figure, which is the reason this page exists. The price turns on the distance, the floor, whether a lift is involved and how much is coming with you — and moving companies weigh those differently. Asking several movers covering Hamburg at once is the only way to see the spread for your own move, and it costs nothing.

Four to six weeks is comfortable, and the end of a month is the busy part everywhere, Hamburg included. If your date is fixed and close, say so in the request: a company that cannot make it will tell you quickly, which is worth knowing early.

Yes. Each company sets the area it covers, and your request reaches the ones whose area includes your move-out address in Hamburg — whether you are moving across town or to the other end of the country.
