Munich has the shortest notice periods and the longest waiting lists. Moving on the first of the month means competing with everyone else, so asking several companies at once is less about price here than about getting a date at all.
In Munich the move is rarely the hardest part; finding the flat was. The city has its peculiarities all the same. In Schwabing, Maxvorstadt, Haidhausen or the Glockenbach quarter the houses are old, the stairwells handsome and narrow, and a parking space outside the door is the exception. In Neuperlach, Riem or Freiham the van usually drives right up to the entrance, and there is a lift.
Because almost every tenancy starts on the first of the month, moves bunch up on a few days. You notice it in the price and above all in the calendar: good companies are taken early for those days. If you know your date, do not wait.
Munich is a little dearer than other cities for moving too. For a move within the city you should generally expect around 600 to 1,800 euros. At the lower end is a room or a small apartment, at the upper end a family flat over several floors with assembly. These are guide values, not fixed prices.
The price is set mainly by:

In Munich you apply for a no-parking zone at the Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR). Allow about two weeks, because the signs have to be in place some days beforehand. Many moving companies handle it for a surcharge.
Inside the Mittlerer Ring is the low-emission zone. Vehicles need a green sticker, and further restrictions apply to older diesel vehicles. If you hire a van yourself, check beforehand. With a moving company it is their business.
If you do not have to move on the first of the month, you save the most: a weekday in the middle of the month is easier to get and often cheaper. During the Oktoberfest the city around the Theresienwiese is full, and hotels for helpers from out of town are expensive. Four to six weeks' notice is more of a lower limit in Munich. Get several quotes early, and look at how to spot a reputable company.

Every request is read by a person before it goes anywhere. It then reaches the companies whose service area covers your pick-up address — you do not have to find them or ring round.
Each one arrives by email with a link to your own page. Compare the prices, read what each company says it includes, and ask them anything before you decide.
