Moving in Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe was laid out as a fan-shaped city: from the palace, the streets radiate into the town. That makes a move easy to plan, but in the Weststadt and Südweststadt things get tight outside the door. Comparing early makes a date easier to find.

Around the centre of Karlsruhe lie districts with very different conditions for a move: late-19th-century buildings in the Weststadt, densely built streets in the Südweststadt and historic half-timbered houses in Durlach. Depending on the address, narrow stairwells, missing lifts or restricted access can add to the work.

Weststadt, Südweststadt and Oststadt

These districts have many older buildings of four or five storeys, high ceilings and stairwells without a lift. The streets are densely parked, and a no-parking zone usually makes sense; it is applied for at the city of Karlsruhe. For large furniture on high floors, a furniture lift helps.

Durlach and the Turmberg

Durlach's old town is narrow and partly steep, especially up towards the Turmberg. Not every lane can be reached by a large vehicle. Describe the access in your request so companies plan the right vehicle.

Students at KIT

With the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and other colleges, Karlsruhe is a student city. Around the start of term, demand for moving dates and vans can rise. If you are moving a room in a shared flat or a small flat, it pays to compare quotes as early as you can.

No more low-emission zone

Karlsruhe's low-emission zone was lifted in March 2023; no sticker is needed to drive through the city any more.

Into the surrounding area and across the Rhine

Many moves go to Ettlingen, Rastatt, Bruchsal or Pforzheim, and across the Rhine into the Palatinate, for instance to Wörth. If you move to another state, watch out for its public holidays. Tips for recognising a reputable firm are in Spotting a reputable moving company.

Step-01

Tell us about your move

Where you are moving from and to, when, and roughly what is coming with you. It takes about two minutes, it costs nothing, and you are not committed to anything at the end of it.

Step-02

We pass your request on to suitable movers

Every request is read by a person before it goes anywhere. It then reaches the companies whose service area covers your pick-up address — you do not have to find them or ring round.

Step-03

Quotes come back to you

Each one arrives by email with a link to your own page. Compare the prices, read what each company says it includes, and ask them anything before you decide.

Moving in Karlsruhe: the usual questions

No. It was lifted in March 2023; no sticker is needed any more.

Almost always, as the streets there are densely parked. The city of Karlsruhe is responsible; many moving companies apply for you.

Access. Some lanes are narrow or steep; describe the location in your request and the company will plan a suitable vehicle.

There is no one figure, which is the reason this page exists. The price turns on the distance, the floor, whether a lift is involved and how much is coming with you — and moving companies weigh those differently. Asking several movers covering Karlsruhe at once is the only way to see the spread for your own move, and it costs nothing.

Four to six weeks is comfortable, and the end of a month is the busy part everywhere, Karlsruhe included. If your date is fixed and close, say so in the request: a company that cannot make it will tell you quickly, which is worth knowing early.

Yes. Each company sets the area it covers, and your request reaches the ones whose area includes your move-out address in Karlsruhe — whether you are moving across town or to the other end of the country.
