Moving in Baden-Württemberg

Moving within Baden-Württemberg, into the south-west or away from it? With one request you get free, no-obligation quotes from moving companies and can compare them at your leisure.

Around eleven million people live in Baden-Württemberg, spread across a landscape with many differences in height: the Rhine valley in the west, the Neckar valley, the Black Forest and the Swabian Alb in between, and Lake Constance in the south. For a move, what often counts here is not only the distance but whether the road to the new home runs uphill.

Distances between the cities of Baden-Württemberg vary a great deal: Mannheim and Heidelberg are close together, while a move between Freiburg and Ulm means a longer drive. Each city also has its own conditions, from Stuttgart in its valley basin and Karlsruhe on the Rhine plain to Ulm on the Danube. Within a city, access, floors and carrying distances count above all.

Living on the slopes

In many cities the residential districts climb the slopes, for instance in Stuttgart with its Stäffele, in Pforzheim, Reutlingen or Heidelberg. Steep, narrow streets limit how close a larger vehicle can get to the front door, and steps lengthen the carrying distances. Describe in your request where the vehicle can stop and how many steps there are to the door.

Old towns and pedestrian zones

Historic centres such as Heidelberg, Freiburg or Ulm are narrow, and large parts are pedestrian zones. Depending on the city, the street and the time of day, access restrictions can apply or exemption permits may be needed. Clarify the conditions with the city administration in good time. Mannheim has a particular feature: in its centre many addresses are given by the squares, such as Q 6 or N 7.

Low-emission zones: what still applies

Several cities in Baden-Württemberg have lifted their low-emission zones in recent years, among them Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Freiburg, Heidelberg, Ulm, Heilbronn and Reutlingen. In Stuttgart the zone still covers the whole city, together with bans on older diesels, and Pforzheim also requires the green sticker. Moving companies from the region know where things stand; with a van you rent yourself, it is worth checking beforehand.

Applying for a no-parking zone

Where there is little space outside the house, a no-parking zone helps. The city in question is responsible, and depending on the place the application needs a few days to a few weeks' notice. Many moving companies apply for you and put up the signs too.

Public holidays and long distances

Besides the nationwide holidays, Epiphany on 6 January, Corpus Christi and All Saints' Day are holidays in Baden-Württemberg. If you move to another state, check both calendars. Longer moves often run along the A5 through the Rhine valley, the A8 between Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Ulm or the A81 towards Heilbronn and Lake Constance, where delays are to be expected in rush hour and at the start of school holidays.

Comparing moving companies in Baden-Württemberg

Your request goes to the companies whose service area includes your move-out address: for a move within the state often firms from your region, for long distances also those that drive all over Germany. Through Umzigo you request moves with both addresses in Germany; France and Switzerland are close, but a move there does not go through this request. How the costs are made up is explained in Calculating moving costs.

After moving in, you usually have two weeks to register with the registration office at your new place of residence.
