Heidelberg lies in the Neckar valley and makes particular demands on a move: narrow lanes in the old town, steep access on the slopes and limited parking in densely built districts. Comparing quotes early helps you find a moving company that plans around these local conditions.
The Königstuhl rises on one side of the river and the Heiligenberg on the other. Between them the old town stretches narrowly along the river, Neuenheim lies opposite, and on the plain towards the Rhine are the Weststadt, Bergheim and the new Bahnstadt.
The Hauptstraße is a long pedestrian zone, the side lanes are narrow, and many houses have tight stairs. A removal van cannot reach everywhere: to drive into the pedestrian zone it needs an exemption permit from the city of Heidelberg, which should be applied for at least two weeks in advance; many moving companies handle this. Expect longer carrying distances. For heavy or bulky furniture, a furniture lift can help where local conditions allow one to be set up.
Across the Neckar, Neuenheim has many villas and large period flats, while Handschuhsheim has old village centres with narrow streets. On the slopes it gets steep, and not every driveway is wide enough. Describe the route from the vehicle to the front door in your request.
The Weststadt has dense period buildings with little parking; a no-parking zone from the city of Heidelberg usually makes sense there. The Bahnstadt has new buildings with lifts and underground car parks; it is best to clarify with the property management beforehand where the removal van can stop.
With the university and several colleges, many people move around the start of term in October and April, and dates can become scarcer then. If you move in those weeks, it pays to compare early.
Heidelberg's low-emission zone was lifted in March 2023; no sticker is needed any more.
