Moving in Freiburg

Freiburg is a university city close to the French and Swiss borders, with very different districts. If you move here, keep in mind particulars such as the Bächle in the old town, narrow stairwells or traffic-calmed streets. An early request makes it easier to compare suitable moving companies and quotes.

Freiburg lies between the Black Forest and the Rhine plain. The old town is small and cobbled, and the districts around it differ greatly: period buildings in the Wiehre, slopes in Herdern, car-reduced living in Vauban.

The old town and the Bächle

The Bächle, narrow water channels along the edge of the street, run through the old town's lanes, and much of it is a pedestrian zone with fixed delivery times. A removal van cannot reach every front door, and carriers have to mind the channels. Ask the city about delivery times and say in your request which lane the house is in.

Wiehre, Stühlinger and Herdern

The Wiehre and the Stühlinger have many older buildings with high ceilings and stairwells without a lift; parking is scarce, and a no-parking zone from the city of Freiburg usually makes sense. In Herdern many houses sit on the slope, often with steps from the pavement to the door.

Vauban and Rieselfeld

In Vauban many streets are traffic-calmed, and parking is mostly in neighbourhood garages rather than outside the house. Loading and unloading is possible, but the vehicle often does not stand right at the door. Mention it in your request so the carrying distances are planned.

Moving at the start of term

With the university and colleges, many people move at the start of term, and demand for dates and small vans can rise then. If you are moving a room in a shared flat or a small flat, it pays to compare early.

The low-emission zone in Freiburg

Freiburg's low-emission zone was lifted in April 2025; no sticker is needed any more.

Into the surrounding area and across Germany

Many moves go into the surrounding area, to Emmendingen, Lörrach or Offenburg, others to a city at the other end of the country. Through Umzigo you request moves with both addresses in Germany; France and Switzerland are close, but a move there does not go through this request. More on the cost of long distances is in Long-distance moves: planning the cost.

Step-01

Tell us about your move

Where you are moving from and to, when, and roughly what is coming with you. It takes about two minutes, it costs nothing, and you are not committed to anything at the end of it.

Step-02

We pass your request on to suitable movers

Every request is read by a person before it goes anywhere. It then reaches the companies whose service area covers your pick-up address — you do not have to find them or ring round.

Step-03

Quotes come back to you

Each one arrives by email with a link to your own page. Compare the prices, read what each company says it includes, and ask them anything before you decide.

Moving in Freiburg: the usual questions

Only to a limited extent: delivery times apply in the pedestrian zone, and the Bächle line the lanes. The more precisely your request describes the location, the better the company can plan.

Many streets are traffic-calmed, and cars mostly park in neighbourhood garages. Loading and unloading works, but carrying distances are often longer; say so in your request.

No. It was lifted in April 2025; no sticker is needed any more.

No. Requests through Umzigo are for moves with both the move-out and move-in address in Germany. For a move abroad, contact a company that offers international moves directly.

There is no one figure, which is the reason this page exists. The price turns on the distance, the floor, whether a lift is involved and how much is coming with you — and moving companies weigh those differently. Asking several movers covering Freiburg at once is the only way to see the spread for your own move, and it costs nothing.

Four to six weeks is comfortable, and the end of a month is the busy part everywhere, Freiburg included. If your date is fixed and close, say so in the request: a company that cannot make it will tell you quickly, which is worth knowing early.

Yes. Each company sets the area it covers, and your request reaches the ones whose area includes your move-out address in Freiburg — whether you are moving across town or to the other end of the country.
