Moving in Bochum

Bochum is a university city and the Ruhr area at once: at the start of term thousands move, and on the A40 every quarter of an hour counts. Comparing early makes it easier to find a moving company that fits your date.

Bochum lies in the middle of the Ruhr area, and the motorways meet here: the A40 runs right across the city, the A43 from north to south. For a move between Wattenscheid and Langendreer, between the Ehrenfeld and Stiepel, the time of day therefore matters more than the distance. A company that knows Bochum does not put the drive in rush hour.

Start of term and student moves

With the Ruhr University and several other colleges, Bochum is one of the big student cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. Around the start of term in April and October many students move, above all in Querenburg near the campus, in the Ehrenfeld and in the city centre. Small vans and helpers for a few hours are quickly booked in those weeks. Anyone moving only a room in a shared flat should ask early or choose a date outside that time.

For family moves the reverse applies: in the weeks after the start of term there is often more room, and larger teams are easier to get.

Old buildings, post-war blocks and mining settlements

Homes in Bochum are as varied as its districts. In the Ehrenfeld and around the Bermudadreieck there are old buildings with high ceilings and narrow stairs. Many neighbourhoods were rebuilt after the war with three- and four-storey houses without lifts. In the former mining settlements the houses are low, but a garden, shed and cellar come with them. And in the high-rises in Querenburg the lift is the bottleneck that is worth reserving in advance.

For the price this means: in old buildings the floor and stairwell count, in the settlements the cellar and shed, in the high-rise the time the lift is free. State in your request which type of building it is, and you compare quotes on the same basis. Whether a fixed price or an hourly rate suits you better is explained in Fixed price or hourly rate for your move?.

Parking in the centre and the Ehrenfeld

Around the Bermudadreieck, in the Ehrenfeld and in the city centre every space is taken in the evenings and at weekends. Anyone moving there should apply for a no-parking zone at the City of Bochum, ideally three weeks ahead, or ask the moving company to. In Querenburg the lift in the high-rise is more of a bottleneck than parking. The Ruhr low-emission zone applies in Bochum too; with a hired vehicle look out for the green sticker.

Moves into the surrounding area

Many moves lead to Herne, Witten, Hattingen, Essen or Dortmund. The cities lie so close together that companies from the whole area work in Bochum. When comparing, look not only at the price but also at customer reviews.

Step-01

Tell us about your move

Where you are moving from and to, when, and roughly what is coming with you. It takes about two minutes, it costs nothing, and you are not committed to anything at the end of it.

Step-02

We pass it to movers in your area

Every request is read by a person before it goes anywhere. It then reaches the companies whose service area covers your pick-up address — you do not have to find them or ring round.

Step-03

Quotes come back to you

Each one arrives by email with a link to your own page. Compare the prices, read what each company says it includes, and ask them anything before you decide.

Moving in Bochum: the usual questions

Around the start of term in April and October, when many students move, and at the end of the month and on Saturdays. If you are flexible, a weekday in the middle of the month is the easiest time to find a date.

Often yes, especially without a car. For small moves many companies offer a van with helpers for a few hours. State in your request how much is being moved, and you will receive suitable quotes.

The lift. Ask the property management whether it has to be reserved or lined with protective mats for the move, and state the times in your request.

Usually yes, because parking there is scarce. It is applied for at the City of Bochum; many moving companies take care of it if you mention it in your request.

There is no one figure, which is the reason this page exists. The price turns on the distance, the floor, whether a lift is involved and how much is coming with you — and moving companies weigh those differently. Asking several movers covering Bochum at once is the only way to see the spread for your own move, and it costs nothing.

Four to six weeks is comfortable, and the end of a month is the busy part everywhere, Bochum included. If your date is fixed and close, say so in the request: a company that cannot make it will tell you quickly, which is worth knowing early.

Yes. Each company sets the area it covers, and your request reaches the ones whose area includes your move-out address in Bochum — whether you are moving across town or to the other end of the country.
