Moving in Dortmund

Dortmund is the largest city in the Ruhr area, and anyone moving here notices two things: the B1, which divides the city into north and south, and Borussia Dortmund's fixture list. Comparing early finds a moving company that keeps both in view.

Dortmund's centre lies inside the Wall, the ring road around the city centre. From there the districts stretch far in every direction: north into the Nordstadt, Eving and Huckarde, south across the Kreuzviertel to Hörde, Hombruch and the edge of the Ardey hills, east to Brackel and Aplerbeck. Right across the south runs the B1, where little moves in the morning and evening.

Match days, the fair and the B1

When Borussia Dortmund play at home, streets around the stadium, the Westfalenhallen and the B1 are full and parking is rare, often hours before kick-off. The same goes for big fair and concert days at the Westfalenhallen. Anyone moving in the Kreuzviertel, the Gartenstadt or Hörde should put the date on a day without a home match. The rest of the week the B1 sets the pace: a move from Hombruch to Aplerbeck takes half as long in the morning as in evening rush hour.

From the Kreuzviertel to the Phoenix-See

In the Kreuzviertel and the Nordstadt there are old buildings with three or four floors, narrow stairs and few parking spaces. Around the Phoenix-See in Hörde, by contrast, the buildings are new, with lifts and underground car parks, but often with exact rules on when and where deliveries may be made. In the outer districts, terraced and detached houses with cellars and garages predominate.

What that means for the quote: in old buildings it is mainly the carrying that costs, at the Phoenix-See the coordination with the property management, on the outskirts the contents of cellar and garage. Describe your building as precisely as possible, and compare several quotes before you book.

Parking in the Kreuzviertel and the Nordstadt

In these two districts a space outside the door is rarely available without a no-parking zone. You apply for it at the City of Dortmund, and because it has to be signposted some days beforehand, it belongs on the list early. Anyone moving on a match-day weekend needs it all the more. Many moving companies handle the application and signs if asked.

Moving in Westphalia

Dortmund is the eastern edge of the Ruhr area and at the same time the gateway to Westphalia. Many moves go to Lünen, Unna, Schwerte, Witten or Bochum, and companies from those towns work in Dortmund as well. With one request you reach the companies whose area covers your address.

Step-01

Tell us about your move

Where you are moving from and to, when, and roughly what is coming with you. It takes about two minutes, it costs nothing, and you are not committed to anything at the end of it.

Step-02

We pass it to movers in your area

Every request is read by a person before it goes anywhere. It then reaches the companies whose service area covers your pick-up address — you do not have to find them or ring round.

Step-03

Quotes come back to you

Each one arrives by email with a link to your own page. Compare the prices, read what each company says it includes, and ask them anything before you decide.

Moving in Dortmund: the usual questions

If you live in the south of the city, better not. Around the stadium, the Westfalenhallen and the B1 the streets are full and parking is scarce. Look at the fixture list before choosing a date.

The property management's rules: when the lift may be used, whether it is lined with protective mats, and where the van can stop. Mention these points in your request.

No, but it belongs in the request. Then the companies plan enough helpers and calculate the carrying time correctly.

At the start of term at the TU in April and October, at the end of the month and on Saturdays. A weekday in the middle of the month without a home match is usually the best choice.

There is no one figure, which is the reason this page exists. The price turns on the distance, the floor, whether a lift is involved and how much is coming with you — and moving companies weigh those differently. Asking several movers covering Dortmund at once is the only way to see the spread for your own move, and it costs nothing.

Four to six weeks is comfortable, and the end of a month is the busy part everywhere, Dortmund included. If your date is fixed and close, say so in the request: a company that cannot make it will tell you quickly, which is worth knowing early.

Yes. Each company sets the area it covers, and your request reaches the ones whose area includes your move-out address in Dortmund — whether you are moving across town or to the other end of the country.
